DIY Holiday Crafting

T-2 months until Christmas and while most of you are still thinking about what you’re going to wear for Halloween, the Bella Mia team is hard at work preparing for another holly jolly Christmas! We’re taking you on a behind the scenes tour of this year’s decorations, themes, and how to make some of our favorite holiday decor!

Our Holiday Themes

Before we dive into what crafts we are making, it’s good to keep in mind our overall themes and inspiration. Here at Bella Mia, our vibe is a woodsy bohemian Christmas.

How To Make Chalkboard Wood Slices

This may seem like an obvious DIY but there is special art to making the perfect chalkboard wood slice.

  1. To start, gather your slices of wood which can be bought at any local craft store. (Don’t forget to bring a coupon!)

  2. Looking at the slice of wood decide how much space you want to leave between the edge and the chalk portion. For ours, we decided we wanted at least an inch of the wood showing.

  3. Measuring an inch inward, make a note of the closest “ring” and this will be your painting guide.

  4. Paint a thin layer using Chalkboard Paint working from the center outward to your ring guide.

  5. Let it dry and apply a second layer if unsatisfied with thickness.

  6. Grab a piece of chalk and decorate away!

How To Make Felt Rolled Flowers

  1. Pick out your colors of felt! You’ll a shade for your flowers. If you’re feeling bold- grab a second color to have multi-colored flowers! We chose the colors: red and burgundy.

  2. To start making the flower, cut the felt into circles. If you want difference sized flowers, make several sized circles.

  3. Once you have cut all of your circles, you’ll begin cutting spirals into the circles. Pro tip: Start with a wider spiral and make the spiral more narrow as you move to the center. Do this for both sized felt circles.

  4. After you have everything cut, take your spirals and begin to roll it towards the center of the spiral. Keep your edges aligned and as you get to the very center, add a dab of hot glue and make the center your base for the flower. If you have any extra fold it up to add another layer of petals.

  5. Now that you have your flowers, you need to attach it to something! You can glue them together or add them to jackets, bouquets, or wreaths! We decided to glue ours to our hand-tied garland!
